Often I get asked to help people start new nonprofits organizations. You can ask them, I encourage them to make sure they are getting dirty before they incorporate a new nonprofit.
A nonprofit starts when someone gets a vision for a solution to a felt need. Often we think the first thing we need to go and do is incorporate a nonprofit organization and file for tax exemption.
The truth is, like most small businesses, most nonprofits never survive beyond five years.
I’ve watched many people spend all their time and money starting nonprofits and businesses instead of going out and getting messy in activity first. I always encourage people to force themselves to incorporate. Incorporating, having a slick logo and website are meaningless if there is no real activity of changing people’s lives! Go get busy. Get your hands dirty. Make it to where you have no choice but to incorporate.
Longevity and sustainability are determined in the foundation. The greatest asset your organization will ever have is a trail of changed lives.
