The Cycle of Courage

Before salvation, God starts a cycle of courage in all of our lives. Do you remember where you were when you accepted Christ? I was 10 years old at an outdoor outreach program sitting in the bleachers by a high school football field. I remember during the invitation asking my father if I could go forward for prayer. My heart was pounding. My palms were sweating. God gave me courage. That night I took Jesus only for salvation. I look back now and know that had God not given me courage, I don’t know if I would have ever known Jesus.

How about you? When you trusted Christ, do you remember being fearful? If you went forward like I did, then it took courage to get up out of your seat and go forward to pray to trust Christ. Many have taken courage beside their beds or in a coffee shop with a trusted friend. The settings are endless. Each requires courage.

I’ve met so many Christians without a sense of mission. They have salvation for themselves, but they have no sense of mission in their lives from God. Does God only call some Believers and not others? No. As we read earlier in Matthew 28:18-20, Jesus gave us the Great Commission. This is not a mission for only some. A Believer without a mission is like water that’s not wet. It’s impossible. It can’t be.

For example, look at Abraham. God told Abraham, “I will bless you and make you a blessing.” Abraham is the spiritual father of every follower of Christ. We all know people who are dormant in their relationship with God because they took the blessing, but are yet to become a blessing. Why do some Believers become a blessing to others while others just stay blessed but never become a blessing to others? The difference is found in discovering the need for courage, our obedience to God, and whether we choose to be a blessing or not.

Courage is a choice. At salvation we experience God, receive Jesus, and give our lives to God. The very next morning the opportunity to experience, receive, and give continues. God always has more for us. The more of God we experience the more courage we will need.

Let’s not kid ourselves. Every one of us has experienced knockdown, drag-out, fighting with God, ourselves, and others over the fears that rise up when we are confronted with how much higher God’s ways are compared to ours. Oh, we need courage alright.

Anyone who says following Christ is for wimps has clearly never met Jesus. Thank God He primes the pump with courage before salvation so we can make the choice to trust Jesus for salvation. If God didn’t prime the pump with courage, we’d never know Jesus.

As I said, once we come to Jesus, courage becomes a choice. It is best seen in what I refer to as The Courage Cycle. Allow me to explain:

As we ask God for more, we receive more of God. The more of God we receive the more courage we need to obey. So, we take more courage and ask God for more. The more courage we take, the more of God we receive. The more of God we receive, the more courage we need to take.

The first time God gave me courage to ask Him for more was when I prayed, “God, if there is more to you than this then I want it.” The more I experienced God, the more courage I needed. The more courage I took, the more of God I received. The more of Him I received, the more courage I needed in order to obey God. The more courage I took, the more of Him I received.
